IPCUM TO HOLD CONFERENCE ON CAUSES OF TERRORISM

Lay leaders, students, the general public and clergy will gather on Monday, April 28, 2003, from 9 a.m. to 3: 00 p.m. at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in South Bend to explore the causes of terrorism. The conference is sponsored by Indiana Partners for Christian Unity and Mission (IPCUM), the successor to the Indiana Council of Churches.

One of IPCUM's three priorities is to assist churches in addressing the culture of violence. Terrorism is the attempt to achieve political ends through violent means.

The conference will include worship, discussion groups and a response panel. The featured speaker is Dr. George Lopez, Director of Policy Studies at The Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies. Lunch is included in the $25 registration fee.

DISCUSSION ON RELIGION AND MEDIA WITH SR. MARY MARGARET FUNK

On Sunday, April 25 Butler University will be the site of a discussion on Religion and Media: From Misconception to Understanding. This event is free and open to all.

Speaking will be Sr. Mary Margaret Funk. Sr. Funk is a Benedictine Nun and member of Our Lady of Grace Monastery in Beech Grove. She is the Executive Director of the Monastic Interreligious Dialogue Board. She has engaged in interfaith dialogue with American Muslims in an effort to bridge the gaps that seem to divide Christianity and Islam. Her most recent book Islam Is: An Experience of Dialogue and Devotion examines Islam as compared to Christianity.

Also speaking is Ms. Judith Cebula. Ms. Cebula was for ten years the religion reporter for the Indianapolis Star. She is now the Director of Butler's Center for Faith and Vocation. The Center opened in 2003 as an outlet for students to integrate spirituality into their studies. It offers programs, internships and international travel in which students can get involved. The Center is co-hosting the discussion.

Church Women United Fall Forum - Human Rights Ecumenical Prayer Service and Celebration featuring Fran Quigley.

Fran Quigley, a grad of Hanover College and IU School of Law, was Executive Director of the Indiana ACLU, and is now the liaison between the IU Medical School and a medical school in Kenya, specializing in eradicating HIV/AIDS. Fran will be both the principle speaker at the Forum and the honored recipient of our first Human Rights Certificate and pin.

During the Forum several members will express their concerns about abuses of Human Rights that, in their opinion, are taking place in Indianapolis and in the State of Indiana.
